Die Alte Mu ist ein Ort, an dem junge Kreative unterstützt werden, ihre Ideen umzusetzen. Einer von diesen kreativen Köpfen ist Greg Haji Joannides aus Griechenland, er ist über das Stipendienprogramm „START – Create Cultural Change“ zur Alten Mu gekommen. Für sechs Wochen hospitiert er hier und beschäftigt sich vor allem mit dem Thema Community.
Greg lebt auf der griechischen Insel Nisyros und ist dort Visual Artist. Beim START Programm hat er sich beworben, um seine Idee für ein gemeinschaftlich umgesetztes Recyclingprojekt auf der Insel weiterzuentwickeln. Denn auf Nisyros gäbe es kein Leitungswasser, erzählt Greg. Alles komme in Plastikflaschen auf die Inseln und der entstehende Müll stelle ein großes Problem dar. Doch Greg hat eine Idee: warum nicht etwas Kreatives aus dem Müll machen? In Workshops und Kulturevents möchte er die Bewohner der Insel zum Mitmachen animieren. Doch wie bringt man die Menschen zusammen und kreiert eine neue Form des Recyclings auf der Insel? Mit diesen Fragen im Gepäck bewarb er sich bei START und konnte aus den teilnehmenden Gastinstitutionen seine Favoriten wählen, die am besten zu seinem Projekt passen. Seine erste Wahl war die Alte Mu.
Austausch setzt neue Impulse
Die Alte Mu ist eine von 30 deutschen Kultureinrichtungen, die im Programm „START – Create Cultural Change“ griechischen Stipendiat*innen die Chance bieten, sich im internationalen Kulturmanagement zu qualifizieren. „Wir machen bei dem START Programm mit, weil es perfekt zum Konzept von C-20 passt“, so Marius Wittmann, Koordinator des C-20 Institut für transformative Utopien. „C-20 soll Raum geben zur Weiter-(Entwicklung) eigener Projektideen und, wenn passend, mit den Zukunftsperspektiven der Alten Mu koppeln.“ Zum einen kann durch das START Programm ein Projekt weiterentwickeln werden, zum anderen setzt der kulturelle Austausch neue Impulse. „Mit seinem Projekt Nisyrio verfolgt Greg einen interdisziplinären Anspruch, der genau zu den Kompetenzen der Alten Mu passt. Es wäre echt super, wenn die Projekte sich gegenseitig befruchten und voneinander profitieren“, so Marius.
Die Community hier funktioniert
Das Interessante an der Alten Mu sei für Greg die Arbeit mit der Gemeinschaft gewesen. Und seine Erwartungen sollten nicht enttäuscht werden. Schon in seiner ersten Woche in Kiel lernte er viele der Projekte in der Alten Mu kennen und ist sichtlich begeistert. Die Community und auch die Kreativität an diesem Ort sei sehr beeindruckend, so Greg. Das Konzept funktioniere. In den nächsten Wochen möchte Greg auch hier vor Ort ein kleines Projekt umsetzen. Geplant ist ein Kunstevent am 31. Oktober im Alte Mu Container, bei dem ein 3D-Drucker zu den Klangwellen eines traditionellen Songs seiner Heimatinsel Nisyros eine alte griechische Vase produziert. Zudem wird am 1. November ab 21 Uhr im Turm der Alten Mu die Installation mit Musik vorgeführt.
Danach bewirbt sich Greg auf die zweite Phase des START-Programms, bei dem es darum geht, mit der Umsetzung vor Ort auf Nisyros zu starten. Unterstützung erhalten die Teilnehmer dann in Form von Schulungen und einer Finanzierungshilfe.

Working with communities
Alte Mu is a place that supports creative minds to kick-start their ideas. One of these is Greg Haji Joannides from Greece. He is a Fellow from the capacity building and fellowship program „START – Create Cultural Change“. For six weeks he visits Alten Mu and wants to learn about the working community concept here.
The visual artist Greg lives on the Greek Island Nisyros. He applied for the START program, to develop his idea of a platform to keep waste within the island and make it sustainable through cultural activities, including workshops, visual and applied arts, new architectural material, design, printing, etc. „On the island is no water. Everything comes in plastic bottles and that is a lot of trash“, so Greg. He joined the START program as a way of developing his ability to bring together and motivate the entire Nisyros society to create a new living environment through waste recycling and upcycling. Among all participating host institutions, Alte Mu was his first choice.
Impact and impulses
Alte Mu is one of 30 german cultural institutions that offers greek fellows in the program „START – Create Cultural Change“ the chance to qualify in international cultural management. „The concept of the START programm matches totally with our concept of C-20“, says Marius Wittmann, coordinator of C-20 institute for transformative Utopia. „Developing own ideas and, if compatible, connect to the vision of Alte Mu is the main idea of C-20. By participating in the START program we help creative minds to develop their projects and in return we get a lot of cultural exchange and new impulses.“ The projekt Nisyrio has an interdisciplinary approach just like the Alte Mu. That´s why both project will hopefully benefit from each other.
A community that works
Greg is mostly interested in the community at Alte Mu. „My first impression was that this place was far more than I expected“, so Greg. „I wasn´t aware of the whole community concept here. So many groups exist here und decide together. Alte Mu is a mechanism that‘s working.“ For the next weeks Greg wants to implement a micro-project. An event around a 3d-printer that prints art objects to the sound waves of an traditional song from his home island Nisyros. Also a video projection will be part of the art event. There will be an 24 hours installation at the Alte Mu Container on 31th october and the next day, on 1st of november will be an installation and sound at the Alte Mu Tower.
